All animals are equal…..
This quote may apply to plant also or maybe not.
Based on the nutrient they offer, every plant just seems to be… yes you guessed it, in its own class. Some class of plant are a rich source of macronutrients like carbohydrates, Proteins, and Fats, while others are rich in micronutrients like the Carotenoids, Vitamins and Trace minerals. But both these nutrients are essential to the normal growth and development of the body. And as such one cannot afford to neglect any one of them. We can supposedly then say that all plants are equal after all.
But my focus in this post is on a macronutrient – Protein.
Protein forms part of a food class that is needed in large quantities essentially for the growth of the body and in the building of muscle mass. There are basically two types of protein based on their sources. These are Plant Proteins found in Nuts and Legumes and Animal Proteins found usually in meat, poultry foods and seafood.
Protein is a nutrient that is present in the body in fairly and relatively large amounts. Studies have shown that for every 10kg of the weight of a man, 1.5kg of it is protein. Also, protein can add to the caloric intake of a person up to 4 calories per gram. This is huge speaking in energy terms.
The amino acid which elementary contains Nitrogen, Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen and Sulphur is the building block of protein. These are what makes it easy for protein to aid the building of muscle mass. The immune system also benefits from amino acids as it helps to strengthen it.
The daily needs of Proteins are different for every individual based on three criteria which are; sex, age, and the level of physical activity.
An athlete will usually need more protein than, say a person who spends half of the day working on a computer. But however the case, it is recommended that between 15 and 35 percent of your daily calories should be protein. Where an average person will need about 0.8g of protein per kilogram of body weight, an athlete will be needing up to 2g of protein per kilogram of body weight.
Sources Of Proteins.
Protein as previously hinted basically has two sources vis-a-vis Plant and Animal sources. Let’s take a quick look at these two sources and some examples.
Animal Protein Sources.
These are Proteins found as a result of consuming animal diets. Some have been found to be very high in Protein examples includes; Lean ground beef, Skinless chicken breast, Pork chops, Turkey breast, Sockeye salmon, Yellowfin tuna, and some dairy foods like Greek yogurt, Eggs, and Cottage cheese.
Other sources of animal protein might come as a by-product of processing animal foods. An example is Whey, which is a by-product of the manufacture of cheese. Whey is usually found as a supplement in protein powder and it’s especially useful for building lean muscle mass. You are likely to get up to 20g of protein per single scoop of Whey.
There are numerous vegan foods that are very rich in protein and some of them include; Navy beans, Lentils, Peanut butter, Mixed nuts, Quinoa, Soba noodles, and Soybeans. Soy protein is especially a high source of protein and comes in a variety of different forms, including milk, tofu, various meat substitutes, flour, oil, tempeh, miso nuts and edamame.
Other Sources Of Proteins.
Most times, we do not get what is called the complete source of protein in our diets, so we usually result to supplements especially for people who are looking to build muscle mass, athletes, and people involved in activities that require high energy and calories. These people will usually find solutions in supplements like protein powder. We have a lot of these protein powders available on the market today. Examples include; Whey protein, Casein protein, Rice protein, Soy protein, Egg Albumin protein, Hemp protein and even mixed plant protein.
